The bathrooms in most modern apartments incorporate a concealed system behind the toilet. The cisterns are expensive when compared to a standard close coupled toilet, but are preferred by developers because of the space they have saved and an attractive finish.

Concealed cisterns often come as a complete unit inside a frame. Parts such as float and flush valves are easy to replace. The drawback when one fails apart from the expense is having to strip out bathroom furniture in order to replace the unit. The photos on this page show this job being done.
